Insane Rockfish Blitz - Kayak Fly Fishing Washington's Wild Coast
Parachute Adams Irresistible
Excellent fly. Especially when the light is tough
I sold my standard Hobie scupper cart and replaced it with the C-Tug and I have been very happy with the C-Tug.
C-tug is super versatile. And doesn’t put stress on the scuppers too
Great tip, this would work nice on the the kayak I like to bring a couple of rods and its a struggle to set it up in the yak.
Good call!
I have the Lono bug slinger and have had it out only a couple of times and I love it how ever I wish it had an attachable rail system or a way to add different accessories. It’s a great fishing plant form and i am a 5’6 140 lbs girl. I can load it and get it to the water by myself. That’s not as easy as you would think being there isn’t a lot of real fishing information for women. I can do it but my strength and process are different because I’m built different so i appreciate this boat…I have 2 other very nice inflatables and their is no comparison. It’s a great boat
An attachable rail system would be sweet!
Shutdown for 3.5 years!? I’m glad they’re back up and running. Great interview
Thanks!
Opinion on 8wt casts over 40', 60' and 80'
40’ cast - deadly accurate. 60’ cast - this rod loves to play in the 40-60’ range. 80’ cast - very few anglers can actually cast this distance in a real fishing situation.
I've never thought of this, but I like it and thank you. I've been tying a loop first, but threading the loop through the eye of the hook is a pain sometimes. This eliminates that entirely. Cool !
Glad it helps!!
Great video, I plan on going myself. I was planning on using my 7wt sector for bones. Would that work?
A 7wt sector is an excellent rod for bones! If you're interested in joining us on a trip to Christmas Island, check out our trip for next year: gigharborflyshop.com/hosted-travel/christmas-island/
I fished Christmas Island for 10 days in 1995. We saw no triggerfish and none of the guides or Big Eddy made any mention of fishing for them. What has changed since then? The human population on the island was much lower then and I think the population of bonefish was much greater.
The population has definitely changed, probably doubled or more. I specifically wanted to fish for triggers so I asked to take us to flats that had them. Not all flats have them and some of the flats with more numerous bonefish don't have as many triggers. If you interested in going back, we'd love for you to join us. gigharborflyshop.com/hosted-travel/christmas-island/
Do you know if there is bluegill in there? Lake nahwatzel?
I think there's bluegill in nearly every lake on the kitsap peninsula and in mason county.
@@Gigharborflyshop thank you
usual outstanding clip you probably need to do a trip to cocos island everything in this clip but bigger plus bumpies
The people here are bustling and cheerful, there are also beautiful things here, I will definitely visit them
Cool video! Thanks!
Thanks!!
I use a 11/12 Enforcer on my 15' 10 weight spey rod. Great drag for big kings in Alaska.
That’s a great drag on ANY fish!
This is a beautiful reel. I used the smallest model for a month in New Zealand swinging and it is a flawless piece of equipment.
Thanks for the report. I really like it too!
I love the topic amazing guest. I’m from Chilliwack BC. The Chilliwack system is a great steelhead system as well as the other 4 salmon species and Bull trout. Just landed my first steelhead on the fly may 31st of this year. The great thing about may is the system is fly fishing only for that month. Hint hint. The Coquahalla river is fly only from July until October in the upper section of that river. I’ve found that the more I fish the more I want to fish systems that aren’t as popular. When you have success it’s even more gratifying.
Yeah it’s humbling how much Rich has done for our precious steelhead.
Qs Kokatat suit vs wetsuit? Whats your advice? Also how can you tell if lingcod a female?
Kokatat dry suit all the way. Wetsuit sounds so uncomfortable. Pretty much all the big ones are females. I don’t think the males get that big.
Thanks for sharing, nice video!
You’re welcome!
Fire Tiger? Looks like a baby peacock bass... That is a great color for peacock bass.
I’ve never caught a peacock. Hopefully some day!!
Blake, thanks for the tips. I have a bunch of clousers that have the hook tied as normal, non tube fly and hook bend is near head of fly, when experiencing short strikes from humpies or silvers I'd like to tie on a stinger hook, any recommendations on how to tie on a stinger to a non tube fly that is already tied and the fish are striking short?
You could use a Gamakatsu G-Stinger or just tie with mono or braid a stinger off the bend of the hook.
@@Gigharborflyshopwent with the Gamakatsu G Stinger
Can you put that seat farther back than you had it on the Zepplin 10?
It’s got an adjustable seat with the straps
Do you have an opinion about the commander?
I haven't tried the commander. It'd be a great boat for lakes and more gentle streams. I think the clearwater would be better for more technical rowing. I don't like that it has the built in oars like the Stealth Pro. The ability to upgrade the oars on the Clearwater is incredible.
I’m using airflo wf7s7 with 20lbs maxima as the end of my main line with loop connected with 6lbs maxima leader 12ft length - hook size 12 mustad - copper beeds - lead wire 0.35 - flashabou green and chenille olive uv
Thanks for the comparison. Curious about how the Clearwater compares to the water master Kodiak that the video briefly showed.
Hello, we liked the Clearwater more because of the upgradable oars and the better raft design for rivers with more rocker in the front and back.
Some flies you just can’t buy !
ain't that the truth!!
What time of year was this? Heading that way in August and unsure how to dress or what gear to bring (never fished that area). Great video, thanks for sharing!
I hope you’re not going alone….
Great info I also like the rack of guitars in the back!
Thanks!
The people are amazing! Great video
Yes they are!
Simple and Fishy. Great looking pattern. I will have to spin some up! Do you have any issues with durability on the marabou body? Kind of surprised not to see some kind of counter wrap.
I think if that body segment was longer it’d have more exposure but it’s pretty durable. The key is twisting the material so the fibers lock each other down.
@@Gigharborflyshop Thanks!
What line wt fly rod are you using for these size of flys?
Fast action 7wts w/ aggressive front taper are ideal. I am currently using a sage salt r8 with Rio outbound short. 8wts are great too. 6wts can work on lighter flies in puget sound too
Sage is king!!!
Where do you guys camp around that area? Is there a fee?
Our camp spot comes with its positives and negatives. It’s not necessarily an easy area to camp!
you didn't include the best fly for cutthroat trout the reverse spider hands down catches way more than any other mind you the muddler isn't far behind either.
The reverse spider is good but I have found it be more effective seasonally. I also find it more effective in lower river situations than the salt.
Your videos always rock Blake. Cheers, Mazen
Thanks Mazen!!
Splitting the rod pulls the fly line to Leader loop back into the guides- right?
Only if it is a long leader.
@@Gigharborflyshop All the leaders are 7 to 9 ft so to do this I had to eliminate the loop to loop and tie a clinch knot from the leader to the fly line--that allows it to slip through the eyes without catching.
if you're using a 6+ weight rod there will likely be a second stripping guide. You can also attach the fly to that instead of the lower stripping guide. I never use the fly keeper, they are worthless in my opinion.
I never tie to the loop of the fly line. The leader material will cut through the plastic of the loop. The core of the line should still be intact which provides the majority of breaking strength though. But I try to keep my loops clean and tidy. If the loop is wide and hanging up on the guides, it might be looped on incorrectly. The proper way to loop on the leader is to pass the leader loop over the fly line and then thread the tip of the leader through the loop of the fly line, then when you pull down it will make a double symmetrical loop that kind of looks like a figure eight right before it pulls tight. The loop of the leader should be pulling on both sides of the loop of the fly line equally. I hope that makes sense. It's simple, yet complicated to explain with words! haha
@@Gigharborflyshop Yes I am using the second guide; if your leader/tippet is more than 2x the distance from the back of the reel and that second guide, the leader to fly line loops will be pulled into the upper guides of the top section when you pull the top 2 sections (4 piece rod) down adjacent to the bottom 2. So for example on my orvis 8"6" rod, that distance is 3'6". So if the leader and tippet is greater than 2x that ( or 7 feet) the loops get pulled in. I have a 9' leader so the loops get pulled din by 2 feet.
Could you put a70# lab on the back of the Clearwater?
Yeah, but I’d probably want to put something down underneath that’s maybe a little more rigid? But size and capacity are fine.
Is it possible to sight fly fishing in puget sound? Thanks 🙏
Yes, kinda. But it’s not like tropical saltwater flats type of sight fishing.
Ill be in Gardens of the Queen in a month.
You'll love it! Hope you have a great trip!
This channel is incredible … thanks for posting!
Wow, thanks! I’m super stoked you’re digging it!
Any where you can recommend to buy these at?
yeah, we sell them. give us a call 253-851-3474
what weight rod would be best for this? Thanks
7-8wt rods are best for coho
@@Gigharborflyshop Thanks. You guys are rocking it! Keep it up!!
I have read about the seams splitting on the breeze. Have you seen this happening much?
Only on a board that was left out in the sun
I bought this kit from you guys yesterday and it doesn't have the pink chenille in it. I guess I have to wait to get that to make some of them.
Did you contact the guys at the shop about the issue?! Sorry!
Very In formative . And helpful thankyou
Glad it was helpful!
I’ve never been fly fish so I’ve never used them. But I got started making flys when I was in HS 40yrs ago because my dad liked fly fishing. I made flys for him. Have always found it a relaxing hobby. Liked to occasionally make variations. changing the shape or color. Some worked some failed. But I enjoyed it, & he didn’t mind trying them out.
Thanks for sharing
Fly rods don't fit in those metal tubes not to mention they will scrap the finish off of your reel. A plastic tube designed for fly rods would be a better option. Those racks and buckets are very pricey.
I agree
@@Gigharborflyshop I'm going with a cooler fly rod mount setup using Railblaza fly rod holders and their Starport HD mounts.
It's rods comparison ! where is the result ?
Have you tried this on trout???
I haven’t….should I?!
I work out there and have seen yall a few times. I was out that day. I remember seeing your group heading in as I was getting past green buoy on my hobie. Hope to see you guys this season.
Thanks for reaching out. We’ll be out there for sure!
